USD Weekly Update | 4-10-18

Women’s Tennis

USD Women’s Tennis defeated San Francisco 4-0 on Saturday, with the Toreros dominating from start to finish. USD won the doubles point and never looked back vs the Dons. This was the Toreros fourth shutout win of the season. USD’s record now stands at 10-4 and 2-4 in WCC play. The Toreros will head to Malibu for their next match this Friday vs the Pepperdine Waves.

 

Men’s Tennis

USD Men’s Tennis went 1-1 over the weekend in Northern California. The weekend began with a 4-1 win on Saturday vs the San Francisco Dons. The Toreros won the doubles point and continued to keep the pressure on the Dons. After taking a 2-0 lead, the USD lead was cut in half before the Toreros responded and won the final two matches in straight sets to clinch the victory.

However on Sunday the Toreros were swept 4-0 in Santa Clara ending their 4 game winning streak. The Toreros will return to the court this weekend for matches vs Pepperdine and LMU.

 

Softball

USD Softball took on St. Mary’s this weekend and came away with a series win. On Saturday the Toreros swept the doubleheader vs the Gaels with 5-4 walk off win to open up the series and then a 3-0 win on Saturday evening. Katie Vretzos singled home the game winning run on Saturday in a game where the Toreros played strong defense including a diving stop made by Vretozos in the top of the 3rd inning where She snared the ball on a tricky hop and fired to first from her knees in time to get the runner and end the inning.

In the second game the Toreros strong pitching shutout the Gaels. Hannah Boos pitched a complete game, giving up only 5 hits. On Sunday, USD was done in by a late rally by St. Mary’s. After leading for most of the game, the Gaels scored 5 runs over the final three innings to steal a 6-4 win. The Gaels scored all 5 runs with two outs in each inning. USD is now 23-17 overall with a 2-1 record in WCC play. The Toreos will now head to Santa Clara for a three game series vs the Broncos.

 

Baseball

USD Baseball faced the LMU Lions this weekend and took 2 out of 3 versus their WCC foe. This weekend started with a tough friday night 4-3 loss vs the Lions. With the Toreros trailing 3-1 in the 6th inning, Brett Bewley smacked a game tying two run homer into left field. However in the top of the 9th, LMU took the lead on a fielder's choice, which proved to be the game winning RBI.

The Toreros responded on Saturday and Sunday. USD totaled a season high 18 hits on Saturday in an 11-4 win. USD also set a new high for total bases with 24 and the Toreros top three hitters combined to go 10-for-14 with eight runs and five RBIs. The Toreros led 6-0 after two innings and 8-3 after three in a game where they would never look back.

USD’s hot offense continued as they set a new season high for runs with an 18-6 win. Infielder  Jeff Houghtby hit a grand slam in the 5th inning and finished with 6 RBIs while junior Kevin Collard went 3-for-6 with two doubles and five RBIs. Collard’s performance was enough to earn him WCC play of the week honors. The Toreros now sit at 15-17 overall and 6-6 win WCC play. They will face off versus UC Riverside on Tuesday before hosting a three game series vs St. Mary’s.

 

Men’s Basketball

USD Men’s Basketball hired Sam Scholl as head coach, removing the acting designation from his title. Scholl went 2-2 during his time as acting head coach. Scholl takes over a team that won 20 games last season for the first time since 2007-08 and will be returning 4 starters.
