Women’s Tennis

Both Daniela Morales and Nicole Anderson were named All-WCC honorable mentions last week. Both received honorable mention for their singles and doubles play. Anderson ended the season with a 7-11 overall record, all at the No. 1 spot, while Morales, who played 19 of her 21 matches at the No. 2 spot, finished with a 15-14 overall record, a tie on her team for the second most wins of the year. As a doubles pairing, they went  10-7 overall with a 4-4 record in WCC play.

Men’s Tennis

USD Men’s Tennis won its 5th straight WCC Tournament title on Saturday with a 4-0 victory vs LMU. The victory gives the Torero’s an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and the team will be riding a six match winning streak. USD won the doubles point and continued to dominate in singles play, winning 5 of the first 6 sets.

The Toreros won the clinching match 7-5, 6-0 sending them to the NCAA Tournament and the players into a frenzy. USD will find out its NCAA Tournament opponent on Tuesday May 1 at 2:30 p.m. PT during the selection show.

Softball

USD Softball was swept by LMU this past weekend. The Toreros dropped the first game of the Saturday double-header in extra innings 7-3. The Toreros were out hit 13-5 in the first game. The one-sided hitting continued in the second game of the double header as the Lions defeated the Toreros 9-2. On the day, USD was out-hit 28-11.

Things did get get better for the Toreros on Sunday as they made four errors in the first three innings which lead to six unearned runs. These were all the runs the Lions needed in the 6-0 victory. USD had its opportunities offensively but left two runners on base in five-of-seven innings. The sweep puts the Toreros at 25-24 overall and 4-8 in WCC play. The team will have their final regular season series this coming weekend as they host the BYU Cougars.

Baseball

USD Baseball went 2-1 this past week on the road vs the BYU Cougars. The series started with a Thursday night loss 9-1 in Provo. With the score tied at 1 going into the bottom of the third, BYU scored two to take a 3-1 lead and did not look back. The Cougars added runs in the 5th and 6th in route to the victory.

The Toreros responded however on Friday with an 11-6 win, powered by a grand slam from freshman Adam Kerner. Kerner finished with 5 RBI’s on the night. USD jumped out to a 3-0 lead and led 4-2 going into the 6th inning, where the Toreros scored 6 to put the game out of reach. Starting pitcher Paul Richan went seven innings allowing just three runs and striking out six. The win snapped a 5 game losing streak for the Toreros.

USD won the series with a 9-5 victory on Saturday. Adam Kerner continued his hot hitting, going 4-5. Trailing 2-0 going into the 3rd inning, the team responded by scoring 5 runs over the next three innings to take a 5-2 lead. The Cougars scored two in the bottom of the 5th to cut the lead to  5-4 and the teams would trade runs in the 7th before the Toreros would score three over the final two innings to finish off the game.

Jay Schuyler was named the West Coast Conference Rawlings Player of the Week for his hot hitting in Provo. He batted .636 over the last four games. The Toreros now sit at 20-24 overall and 9-12 in WCC play. The team faces Texas Tech on Tuesday before heading back to San Diego for a three game series with Gonzaga this weekend.
