Interesting times in Friar Land

Interesting times in Friar Land

This past week was… interesting for the Padres.

It began with a dropped pop up walk off and ended with a bench clearing brawl. In between that, a pitcher hit a three run home run. Things started off well for the Friars as they took the first game in Houston last Friday 4-1, ending the World Champs five game winning streak.

Luis Perdomo, who came into the game with an 11.25 ERA got the win, going 5 innings giving up just 1 run on 4 hits. Jose Pierla doubled two bring home 2 in the 5th inning to give the Padres a 3-1 lead and Christian Villanueva doubled to give San Diego an insurance run in the 9th. Brad Hand came in and shut the door in the bottom of the 9th to give the Padres their second win of the year.

However, things quickly fell back to Earth for the Padres on Saturday. With the score tied a 0 in the bottom of the 10th and a runner on second base, Astros infielder Alex Bregman hit a shallow pop up to the infield that it looked like Eric Hosmer called. However, Hosmer overran the ball and it fell in behind him and Derek Fisher scored from second base, winning the game for the Astros. Things did not get any better for the Padres on Sunday as they were held to just 1 run on 4 hits by Astros pitching and did not have a hit over the final three innings.

The Padres then headed to Denver for a three game series with the Rockies and came away with a series win. However the major talking point among San Diego sports fan was what happened during the third game on Wednesday afternoon. Throughout the first two games there were three batters hit between the two teams including Manny Margot and Hunter Renfroe. On the first pitch of the bottom of the 3rd inning, Luis Perdomo three behind the back of Rockies star third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado responded by charging the mound, resulting in a scuffle and multiple player ejections.

The Padres would go on to lose the game 6-4, however Eric Hosmer launched his first home run in Padres uniform. San Diego now comes back to Petco Park with a 4-9 record and will face the 5-6 Giants in a 4 game series. Bryan Mitchell (0-1 4.22 ERA) will face off versus Chris Stratton (0-1 4.35 ERA) on Thursday and Tyson Ross (1-1 5.25 ERA) will face Ty Blach (1-1 4.11 ERA) on Friday.

Following that four game series, the Padres will welcome the NL Champion Los Angeles Dodgers in a three game series at Petco.

Injury News: The Padres put Manny Margot on the 10-day DL with bruised ribs on Wednesday but expect him to be back after the 10 days.
