Politics in the Pub LIVE - Run For Something

Welcome to another edition of Politics In The Pub - easily the hottest political satire podcast situated between the 56 and just south of the 8. South of the 8 as our latest episode comes from the heart of North Park inside Bivouac Ciderworks where we had the opportunity to talk about running for office through the experiences of two recent first time candidates.

Episode 3 was a great time with two amazing panelists who ran some pretty special values-based campaigns. They both stayed true to their message, expanded knowledge about the public offices they were running for and made two high profile, yet often overlooked races the ones to truly watch at the recent California primary elections.

While they didn’t win this time around, there are big things expected from Geneviéve Jones-Wright who ran for District Attorney and Omar Passons who ran for the County Board of Supervisors in District 4.

Talking in generalizations here - there are 550,000 elected offices in the US. Around 40 per cent of those go uncontested year to year. That means roughly around 200 thousand races aren’t contested. Let’s say half of those are help by Republicans. That means we need approximately 100 thousand Democrats to run in some of the most un-sexiest races in the country.

But winning back the thousands of seats that make up many legislatures and councils that have been lost over the past decade we need to start somewhere. History is not built in a day or a vacuum. It takes time and the most agile intentionality one can execute.

It’s easy to simply be cliché right now and say “be the change you want to see in Congress.”

However a more telling comment with regards to political representation today that sparks a strong focus for discussion is best captured by the following:

“The forest was shrinking, but the trees kept voting for the axe because its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.”

Politics In The Pub is primarily motivated by adding to expanded civil discourse and we encourage new and diverse voices to step up, run and help represent and amplify the voices of those that need it most at a time when the need is at its greatest. We will even help - just drop us a line and we’ll talk.
