Seniors power Toreros past Colorado
Isaiah Pineiro scored 27 and Olin Carter III scored 22, including 4 three pointers in the first half as USD rallied back from 8 down with 12:16 left to beat the Colorado Buffaloes 70-64.
An even game through most the first half, USD ended the half on a quick 5-0 run to take 35-30 lead into half time. Colorado came out firing to start the second half however, going on a 15-2 run to take a 45-37 lead with just over 12 minutes to go.
An Alex Floresca three point play ended the Buffs run and the Toreros went on a 17-9 run to tie the game at 54 with 6:19 to play. A Yauhen Massalski dunk on the next USD possession put the Toreros ahead 56-54.
Two free throws by Pineiro put USD up 60-56 but five straight points from Colorado put the Buffs back up 61-60 with 1:53 to go. On the next possession however, Isaiah Wright found Pineiro for a dunk, giving the Toreros back the lead 62-61.
After getting a stop on the Buffs next possession, USD closed out the game hitting eight straight free throws as the Toreros defeated Colorado for the second time in as many seasons.
The win did not go unnoticed by national media as a few college basketball writers took to Twitter to note the impressive victory.
USD now stands at 4-1. Their next game will be this Saturday vs. Jackson State at 7pm.
